The Board of Trustees of the Greater Toledo Community Foundation approved a grant in the amount of $7,500 from the Dr. Morton Goldberg Lecture Fund to The University of Toledo Foundation for the College of Law to host the 2023 Dr. Morton Goldberg Lecture.

Professor of Law Emeritus and Distinguished University Professor Howard Friedman will present his lecture “When Religious Liberty Divides Us – Free Exercise of Religion in the 21st Century” on March 23 in the McQuade Law Auditorium.

Through the lecture, Friedman will address the growing number of court decisions protecting those who have religious objections to a variety of regulatory requirements including bakers who refuse to provide wedding cakes for same-sex weddings, individuals who object to COVID mandates, and social service agencies that limit their services to those who agree with their religious doctrines.

Friedman has been on faculty at The University of Toledo since 1970 and has published multiple books, articles and book chapters. He also is the creator and editor of Religion Clause, a blog devoted to legal and political developments in the free exercise of religion and separation of church and state.

“I knew Dr. Goldberg personally,” Friedman said. “I was a member of his synagogue and greatly admire his accomplishments. I have been active for many years in Jewish interfaith and advocacy organizations at the state and national levels, as well as locally in Toledo, Atlanta and Detroit.”
